What is family reunification?

Family reunification allows a foreign national who is legally residing in France to bring their close family members to join them. The applicant must submit an application to the OFII. The OFII examines the application and forwards it to the prefecture, which makes the final decision.

Family reunification for beneficiaries of international protection applies to people who have been granted international protection (refugee status or subsidiary protection), under specific conditions and without applying the rules governing family reunification. To learn more, visit the dedicated Service-Public.fr page on family reunification.

Who is concerned?

For your application to be accepted, there are a number of criteria to be met.

  • You are a non-European foreign national;
  • You have been living in France legally for at least 18 months. For Algerian citizens, this period is at least 12 months (Franco-Algerian agreement);
  • You hold a residence permit valid for one year or more. This permit is either valid, or you have applied for its renewal. Talent passport, pensioner and seasonal residence permits are not covered by family reunification.

  • Your family lives abroad;
  • Your family members are non-European foreign nationals;
  • Your spouse is over 18;
  • Your children are under 18 at the time of the application.

This procedure only allows you to bring your married spouse and children. You cannot bring your parents, brothers and sisters, nephews or nieces.

The required space depends on the number of people who will be living there and the area where the house is located (Zone A, B, or C). Go to the service-public.fr simulator to find out which zone your home is in.

You must have sufficient income to provide for your family in good conditions. If your spouse already lives in France with you, you can also declare their income.

Please note that there are exceptions where the gross minimum wage is not required:

  • Recipients of the Disabled Adults’ Allowance (AAH);
  • Recipients of Supplementary Invalidity Allowance (ASI);
  • People aged over 65 who have been legally residing in France for at least 25 years and are applying for family reunification for their spouse and can prove that they have been married for at least 10 years. Please note that Algerian nationals are not covered by this exemption.

In all three cases, supplementary documentation must be provided.

You can find a list of documents relevant to your situation on the public service website.

All your documents must be translated into French. The translation must be done by a translator certified by a Court of Appeal in France. The list of approved translators is available on the courdecassation.fr website. Translations from other institutions are not accepted.

Visit the "What documents do I need to provide for family reunification?" page to prepare a complete application that meets the administrative requirements.

Log in to your personal space to access the procedure. Fill in the details regarding your identity, your family, your housing and your resources. Documents will be requested at each stage.

The OFII will first check that your application is admissible and complete, meaning that you meet the conditions listed above and that no documents or information are missing.

If your application is incomplete: you will receive a letter from the OFII with the list of missing documents or information. You can also find this list in the tracking of your application.

If your application is complete: you will receive a letter from the OFII with a certificate confirming the deposit of your file, which you can also find online. You must send this document and your civil status documents to your family living abroad.

The OFII or your town hall will contact you to carry out an investigation in your home. We must ensure that your home can accommodate your family and that you have the sufficient resources to do so.

Once your application has been reviewed, it will be sent to the Prefecture. The prefect will decide whether or not to accept your application.

You can still submit your application file by post. In this case, you need to download the CERFA document. You must then send it to your relevant Territorial Directorate with all necessary documents. For contact details, go to the Help page.

There is no point in submitting the same application twice.

This makes it more difficult to process and extends the time required.

What happens once your application has been accepted?

In summary

Family reunification allows a foreign national who is legally residing in France to bring their spouse and children living abroad to join them. To qualify, you must meet certain requirements regarding your personal situation, accommodation, and financial resources. The application is submitted to OFII, which reviews the file and conducts a home assessment to ensure that your family can be welcomed under suitable living conditions. OFII then forwards the application to the prefecture, which decides whether to grant family reunification.
